Beds: Stylish Metal Beds Built for Modern Bedrooms

The bed frame does most of the visual work in a bedroom. Its height, proportions, and finish affect how the whole room looks — even before you choose curtains, lighting, or a rug. Metal beds have been a steady choice in UK homes for years, and the reason is fairly practical: they hold up well, need little maintenance, and fit into most interior styles without much effort, from stripped-back modern rooms to older, more characterful properties.

Why Metal Beds Work Well in UK Bedrooms

One thing that does not get mentioned enough is how well metal handles the conditions in older British homes. Solid wood can swell and contract when heating systems kick on or rooms stay damp through winter. Metal does not. A well-built metal frame stays firm and keeps its shape whether it is installed in a Victorian terrace or a new-build flat.

Weight is the other thing. Solid wood is heavier compared to metal frames, so this is important if you tend to move around often or move rooms frequently. The problem of getting a king-size bed up a narrow staircase isn't easy to deal with anymore, made difficult by an extra twenty kilos of weight.

In terms of aesthetics, a thin metal frame looks like something for the building; it's not like a decoration. It does not date as some types of wood finishes do, and it is always there as a background when delivering the soft furnishings around it.

Metal Bed Sizes Available for UK Homes

Before browsing, measure your room and check your existing mattress size against these UK standard dimensions:

Size

Dimensions

Single

90 x 190 cm

Small Double

120 x 190 cm

Double

135 x 190 cm

King

150 x 200 cm

Leave at least 60 cm on each side of the bed to move around comfortably. Also, check headboard height against ceiling height and window placement before you order, as this gets overlooked more than it should.

Key Features to Look For in a Metal Bed

Feature

What to Look For

Frame Construction

Welded joints and thick-gauge tubing. Frames held together with bolts alone tend to loosen over time with regular movement

Adjustable Height

Useful if you are pairing the frame with a deep mattress or want to adjust the visual proportions of the bed in the room

Headboard and Footboard

Upholstered panels add warmth and help soften the metal structure. Check whether both are included

Slat Support

Solid slats give consistent, firm support. Sprung slats add flex and are better suited to memory foam or hybrid mattresses

Mattress Compatibility

Most metal frames take all mattress types. Worth checking the product spec if you are using pocket spring or latex

Choosing the Right Metal Bed for Your Room

Room Size and Bed Dimensions

In a smaller UK bedroom, a king-size bed is too big; in a larger master bedroom, it is just the right size to fill the space. As a general rule, the bed will take up half or less of the area on the floor. In compact spaces, a double or small double will feel comfortable yet not too cramped to be enjoyed.

Mask off the footprint on the floor and order before. But it's more accurate than relying on a tape measure, which is tedious.

Interior Style

Contemporary, Industrial, Scandi style rooms have a relatively easy time pairing the black metal frames. Greys are much more versatile and are more suitable for lighter and less formal interior designs. Both finishes require very little maintenance, but choose the one that will complement your current flooring and/or wall system instead of competing with it.

Single Sleeper or Couple

One person in a double or small double is comfortable in the room, does not feel like the room is too big. If you're two people, particularly if you're a couple where one or both of you walk around while asleep, a king-size bed is more room worth it.

Storage

Most metal frames sit at a fixed height off the floor. That leaves some under-bed clearance that works for flat storage boxes, vacuum bags, and luggage. If you need more than that, check whether the specific frame has enough clearance to make it practical.

Metal Beds Worth Looking At

The Arles Metal Bed has an adjustable height frame with an upholstered headboard and footboard in grey. The padded panels warm up the metal structure and give it a more finished look than a plain rail frame. It works in both smaller rooms and larger ones without feeling out of place in either.

The German Metal Bed comes in black with the same adjustable height construction and upholstered head and footboard. It suits contemporary and industrial-style rooms well. The dark finish is easy to maintain, marks are less visible, and a wipe down keeps it looking clean.

The Swiss Metal Bed takes a quieter approach: a clean, considered frame with an upholstered headboard and footboard in grey, adjustable height, and proportions that work across all sizes from single through to king.

Before You Buy

Measure your room and use masking tape to mark the bed footprint before you order. It gives a much clearer sense of the space than measurements written on paper.

Check headboard height, not just the frame length and width. In rooms with lower ceilings or windows set low into the wall, this matters.

If you are reusing an existing mattress, confirm it is compatible with the frame, particularly for memory foam or pocket spring types.

For king-size orders, measure the hallway, doorframes, and any stairwells the frame will need to pass through.

Check what fixings and tools are included before you start assembling.

General questions

Are metal beds durable?

A well-built metal frame holds its shape and handles regular use without warping, cracking, or sagging. Welded construction outperforms bolt-together frames, which tend to loosen gradually over time. They are also easy to clean.

What mattress works with a metal bed?

Most frames are compatible with memory foam, pocket spring, latex, and hybrid mattresses. Check the slat spacing on the specific model before ordering. Gaps wider than 7 cm are not suitable for memory foam.

Are metal beds noisy? A properly assembled metal bed should not creak. Noise usually comes from joints or bolts that were not fully tightened during assembly. If it starts creaking after a period of use, go through and retighten all the fixings.

What sizes are available?

Single, small double, double, and king. Check the product listing for full external dimensions, headboard width and frame overhang, which affect the total footprint in the room.

Are metal beds easy to assemble?

Most come flat-packed and can be assembled with basic tools in under an hour. The main thing to watch: do not fully tighten any fixings until the whole frame is put together. Check that all joints are properly seated before you tighten anything down.
